"Senators are considering a controversial bill (S-1208) to increase funding
to prevent the use of the drug MDMA, or "Ecstasy." The bill offers
incentives to communities that identify dance clubs as "high-intensity drug
risk areas," with grants for law enforcement to shut down clubs. A similar
bill is before the House (HR 2582). Critics say the new bill will make clubs
more dangerous, and will promote ignorance about the effects of drugs such
as Ecstasy. They argue that clubs and clubgoers have been successful in
making dances and raves safer, through consumer awareness campaigns..."
