I think a nicer alternative to this email would have been constructive
criticism. In the past couple of weeks many postings have come
thru this list that have been complaints backed with little or no
resolution. If you are so upset at the big name DJs that come
thru with what you deem as little talent, please tell us who you
would prefer to see. Promoters rely upon your opinion, give it
to them. Don't just say, "so-and-so major DJ sucks." Try saying,
"I am tired of seeing so-and-so major DJ, do you think you could get
so-and-so local DJ next time?" It is tiring to see a party that was
enjoyed by so many people get trashed yet the trashee gives no resolve.
Maybe you should contact a couple of the promoters on this list
and talk to them about throwing a local DJ party with the cali kids
you would like to see. Figure out a good line-up that will draw
enough people to pay for the venue, security, advertising and help.
Do up a proposal, a solid one, one that works out all the minor
details that you maybe haven't thought of. Do some number crunching
and figure out what your budget is. You will be very surprised to
see how little money you will make, if any, for a $10 party.
It makes me sad to hear complaints that no one throws events with
local cali kids as DJs, there certainly are plenty of them - you just
need to look for them. In the past couple of weeks I have seen several
posts from Spirit at Our House saying they are having a low turn out
yet still intend to pass the cash to the Red Cross. Her Tuesday nights
are filled with local talent, go there. Again, there is Free Thinking and
the Zach Rieken/DJLA crew throwing free evenings of local talent. If
you have buddies that are itching to play, have them tape their session
and pass it along to those promoters so they can get a chance to dazzle
us. Even better, point them to DJLA, have them join the online community
where DJ sessions are posted. You have a responsibility to this scene
to pass the word along about a great unknown DJ that you think needs
to be heard by the rest of us. When you feel there is a small party going
on that is worthy of a positive attendance, post it to this list, don't just
tell
us that we suck and we don't support.
As far as trashing DJs such as Doc, Diz and Farina, that's unnecessary.
Those DJs are more than generous with talking to up and coming DJs,
telling what tracks to watch for, giving out records, telling them what they
just did to attain that beautiful mix, how they read the crowd and adjust
their programming. They are more than generous with the trainspotters
hovering over the tables and pass their records so that they themselves
can later go grab a copy of that fine track.
LA is a very lucky city to draw this talent in smaller, intimate settings
and not at the big huge (and hellish) massives. Where can you see
DJs like Diz and Heather play for 4 HOURS each and rock the house?
I was there for all of Heather's set and could not believe the reviews I
saw later. Her whole set was amazing, it went deep and got
banging later, a real journey. One post even claimed it looked like she
was just going thru the motions and not enjoying her set, obviously you
were not close enough to see her shaking her ass, clapping and getting
into her own mixes and sounds. You truly missed out. For the approximate
700 folks there, they seemed to be enjoying themselves just fine. On a
side note, if you missed out on Johnny Fiasco at Tropical, you really lost.
To see someone that rarely comes to the area play a smaller party than
he is use to was amazing. He was really great, and again, another
nice person who had no trouble socializing with those crowding around
wanting to know what he just threw down.
Every music scene relies upon its audience, it is up to you to promote
or criticize. It is best if you criticize with resolve so that those
throwing
the parties can respond next time. Blanket statements like, "People who
bring out big name djs are not about music, but they are only about the
money" are completely unfair and not well thought out.

deanna
