got to check out doc at a small party in oakland on sunday night. i had
a really good time. when i got there, poppa was spinning in the outside
area. only got to hear a bit of his set, but what i heard was pretty
smooth (if a bit generic).
spun played next; his set was typically eclectic, and i was digging it.
he played a track that he just finished with ben cook and corey black
(of triangle orchestra fame) that had the crowd rockin'.
doc went on a little late, a bit after midnight. i really enjoyed his
set; it was nice to hear him in an intimate (and partially outdoor)
setting; the crowd was very into it, and the place was pretty packed.
the club let him go on until almost 3; he ended with some rocking tunes,
including a donald fagan track, and a steve miller track, as well as
some sick breaky jams.
the sound was really nice; doc had brought a cd player and a rane 2016
with him, and the speakers were meyers (which are generally very nice
and clean sounding). a little bit of distortion, but overall, the sound
was very clean.
the inside room was reggae and dub; due to all the madness outside i
didn't get to check this out too much. supposedly garth was playing in
there as well, although i didn't notice whether he actually showed up or
not.
on friday i checked out the community 11 y anniversary at 177 townsend.
this was also pretty fun; the sound system was great, and tony was
playing some nice stuff when i walked in. spun and rick preston played
an interesting set on 4 decks (which was good, but plagued with
technical problems).
