[Dynagroove] Re: Poison/Greyboy

I've got a lot to say about this last Wednesday, however one thing I will definitely confirm is that Greyboy no-showed on us. The thing that was #1 most annoying is what it did musically to the way we programmed our night -- as you know, just as any good DJ programs his records, most good promoters program out their DJs based upon the music the expect each DJ to play.
It left us in a real sticky situation because our opening DJ who was playing 80's was only supposed to play for an hour, and she ended up going almost an hour over her originally intended slot. She also had to catch a flight, so after a point, we actually ended up having to put a fucking CD on while we waited for our friend Trevor (T.L. Smith) to bring some records, while we waited for Mark Grant to come and play his set. It really made for a fucked up vibe, and to date musically, made for the worst party I've been a part of. Very, very unhappy with Greyboy at this moment.
I mean, seriously... the whole vision with Poison has been (up to this point)... eclectic, groovy opening set... could be 80's.. downtempo.. soul, jazz, funk, reggae, hiphop, ambient, swing, truthfully, the idea was to just have some fun weird, not to be expected music to start the 9pm-11pm people... the people who come early to get in cheap, have some drinks, and give them some headspace to chill and chat. Then Greyboy comes on, throws down his shit (hiphop, acid jazz, whatnot) until 1pm, which works well for his crowd anyway -- they seem to be more of the earlier bar hopper type crowd mixed with a lot of the people who remember him from the early 90's whole Umoja Hi-Fi thing, etc... and then at 1am until 3 or even later, we throw down the sick house music and keep it at that energy until we close our doors. It would be sort of 1/2 the typical musical journey I'd take people on if I was doing a 10pm-6am party, leaving them in a state of uptempo fun instead of taking them all the way up and then back down again...
HOWEVER -- Greyboy didn't show which fucked up that whole plan. fucker. We ended up playing 80's for an hour too long, having to put in a CD for about 20 minutes, and then having our friend spin for another 30 minutes until Mark Grant showed... it sucks too, because the whole situation wrecked a level of trust that you build with people when you put on an event, especially in this whole new "club economy" where we're not dealing with all the same people we used to that would know and love the stuff I've been a part of for the last decade... on many levels, him not showing up fucked with our shit.
Why didn't he show? God knows.. we spoke with him that morning, that afternoon, and then come evening he left a message for my partner telling her that he was going to be a little late, but for us not to trip... as that time started happening, his phone was off, and we just were never able to get a hold of him and never received anymore phone calls from him that evening. He said he had shit going on but truthfully, he just didn't give a fuck enough about his word to us and our word to everybody else and the 1.5 months we've spent promoting this show to be there. I'm kind of offended... but truthfully, just a little more embarrassed. This doesn't ever happen at my parties and I'm really bummed that it did at this one, because it's not how I do it.
So... it sort of derails our whole Poison trip for the second... I mean, if you can't rely on your resident to be there, there's definitely something that's got to give... we'll probably do Poison again.. but I'm not sure if it's gonna be a weekday thing, and unless we got some sort of sincere apology from Greyboy and lots of stuff in writing, I don't know if I wanna be a part of a show he's booked at.
It's important on so many levels to be able to build truth with those around you and those people you work with and most importantly, thost people that support what it is that you do.
So, I apologize about that... I don't know what we could have done, as he was telling us he'd be there up to the bitter end... I wish we had just been able to communicate something, but we were seriously in that "wishful thinking" mode up until the club ended - hoping he'd show and we'd just have him close the party as his punishment for being late... and give him lots of dirty looks and then pay him half or something... you know? But, as it turns out, Mark played some great music and we closed 30 minutes early because Greyboy never came.
The only thing I can think is that he's a fucker and he made us look stupid to the people that knew. I can only promise that this will be the first and last time this ever happens with a show I'm involved with. Period.
