Gav Smith
Disorient / Mr. Bongo
BIOGRAPHY
Gav Smith has been DJing since the early 90s and been involved in the music
business quality control for the last decade. Cutting his DJ teeth with the
warehouse seen of the early 90s wit h a funk, soul, Jazz and house, with
his day job in at Virgin Records A &R he was a source of many grassroots
club music in London, from the Virgin takeover he went on to EMI to carry
the underground torch but found the corporate infrastructure too much and
need to breach out independent, while at the time guesting around London in
seminal clubs like the Milk Bar, Limelight, Gas and The Wag and up and down
the country on various one off's .
During this period he began his fascination with Latin America making
regular trips to buy records and experience the culture and with this
interest in production started making his first trip to the studio. From
this step Gav joined forces with The Mr. Bongo Records shop to start a
label matching his knowledge and expertise along their retail. Together
they launched the Mr. Bongo recorded labels and put on various one off
parties in and around London with a fine funky blend of Latin grooves.
Working with such prestigious legends such as Joyce, Marcus Valle and
veteran percussionist Dom Um Romao and 18 albums behind him as executive
production and compiling the classic compilations Ba-Tu-Ca-Da. Latin Beats
and 1&2 and Brazilian Beats alongside his own production aliases.
With the Mr. Bongo Records shop opening in Japan it was time to launch a
more contemporary label Disorient caters for the more discerning dance
floor and deep house pallet with over 25 release's under his belt alongside
from compiling the Disco template Spaced Out and Japanese flavored Showa
64. Showcasing the labels and his productions within his DJ set's Gav with
has rocked dance floors with a mixed blend of rare Brazilian, Afro deep
house and Jazzy Disco grooves with regular visits to Germany, France,
Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Brazil, Canada and
the US alongside the most respected spinners.
