This Thursday Jan 16th.
Introducing the heavy jazz-funk sounds of MODERN GROOVE ASSEMBLY; live jazz
breakbeats, funk, and nu soul. The MGA is an extralive 10 piece band
comprised of some of the hottest musicians and vocalists in the city. This is
the band that rocked Free Thinking, The Temple Bar, and the Watts Festival!!!
It's a jazz band acting like a DJ; the MGA is strictly dancer friendly... get
your groove on to the new and the vaguely familiar, as the MGA laces their
original material w. badass dancefloor "remixes" of Eric B. and Rakim, Stevie
Wonder, Roy Davis Jr., Ella Fitgerald, Donnie Hathaway, Horace Silver, Nu
Yorican Soul, and more.
The heart of all funk is the drums. The MGA represents with HERMAN MATTHEWS,
one of the finest in the world. Herman was voted "Modern Drummer" magazine's
R&B drummer of the year. He toured and recorded for 2 years as a member of
Tower of Power. He held down the drums for Stevie Wonder on his Mandela tour,
served as R&B diva Kina's music director, and has to be considered a
consummate master musician from any vantage or viewpoint.
The MGA has a dynamic vocal section; 3 ladies who have already made their
marks in the game, w. more to come; KELLI STANTON; her father played
keyboards w. Marvin Gaye...At 14, she decided she wanted a record deal and
called a label. Shortly thereafter, she was in Virgin / EMD trio MQ3. (the
single "Everyday" f. Redman still on rotation in LA.) Musically stifled, she
nevertheless acquired massive experience, stage diving into arena audiences
ahead of Destiny's Child, Usher and the like.
Now at 23, she shares the stage w. newest member CARLETHA WALLS, an x-tremely
accomplished vocalist. She's been in LA only 2 years and has already toured
the world thrice, dropping background vox for Nikka Costa, Sunshine Anderson,
and Christina Aguilera, among others. The vocals are rounded out by MC KIA,
the super athlete, who freestyles, sings, steals the show, and dashes off
into the nite.
Woodwinds maestro LOUIS TAYLOR remains one of the most in-demand session
players in town. An ace on flute, all saxophones (bari, tenor, alto,
soprano), not to mention bass clarinet, clarinet, english horn, and oboe,
Taylor has played, recorded and toured w. Donnie, Mariah Carey, Ray Charles,
Gerald Wilson Orchestra, etc...
The band is glued together by virtuoso bassist JOE SWAFFORD, unbelievably
funky percussionist STEWART KILLEN (formerly of RCA records act Skin, and now
w. local funk favorites Orgone), guitarist AARON DUFFY, and 22 year old
turntabllist THEORY. The group is led by musical director and keyboardist
Steve Catanzaro.
