On Thursday, May 1st, the new CLUB DIY will present an evening of live music, a film screening, and a panel discussion at the Derby nightclub in Hollywood, located at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. CLUB DIY is held on the first Thursday of each month at the Derby and will announce a schedule of dates in other cities shortly. Admission to Club DIY is free to DIY Music Festival, DIY Film Festival and DIY Book Festival participants, or to DIYReporter.com subscribers. Admission for the general public is $6. Paid admissions who pre-register by phone (323-665-8068) with a credit card before April 30th will receive a free transcript of last month's panel, "How To Sell 10,000 CDs In The Next Year...Or Still Make Money If You Don't."
The Club DIY topic on May 1st will be "Independent Music in Film & TV." The panel discussion will be moderated by DIY Convention chairman Bruce Haring and will feature Mike Todd, director of film & television music for ASCAP; Dave Freeman, owner/agent with the Falling Elevator Music Group, which places music in film and television for over 20 labels and artists; Luke Eddins, owner of LukeHits.com, which specializes in placing independent music in film and television; Ray Yee, director of film & television music for BMI; and Michael Pen, president of Pen Music Group, a leading independent music publisher. The discussion will focus on practical advice and actual strategies to find and license music for film/tv projects and how to get your songs to agents, film directors and producers, and music supervisors. Filmmakers, musicians, publishers, record labels and those interested in music supervision are strongly urged to attend. The panel will commence at 8 p.m. on that evening, preceded by a networking cocktail party at 7 p.m. featuring music by Digital CutUp Lounge, one of the leading electronic music groups to emerge from the dance music scene in Asia. Featuring John von Seggern [computer] and Andrew Pask [saxophone], the duo mixes the latest downtempo, dub, and electronica sounds with live jazz.
Live music performances will follow the panel. Featured will be 2003 DIY Song of the Year writer Michael Miller; 2003 DIY Music Festival honorable mention Kelda Nelson; Northern California duo Allison Scull and Victor Martin; and Simpleworld, featuring Zeus, a regular on TV's "Hunter" series. The night will also feature a screening of the 2003 DIY Film Festival best documentary, "Do You Remember? Fifteen Years Of The Bouncing Souls, " at 9 p.m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with co-producers Jeff Alulis and Ryan Harlin, moderated by DIY Film Festival programming head and feature film director Richard Martini. Selections for screening and music performance slots for future Club DIY dates in Los Angeles and other cities are done through the 2004 DIY Music Festival (www.diymusicfestival.com) and the 2004 DIY Film Festival (www.diyfilmfestival.com). Potential candidates can also bring their material to the Derby and sign up. The DIY Convention teaches musicians, filmmakers, authors and entrepreneurs to create, promote, protect and distribute independent film, music and books.
