That's just a chance the dj takes when they're up there. the crowd may like
it, the crowd may hate it.
Personally, i dont think there's anything wrong with it as long as you do it
tactfully and tastefully. Not saying i have tact and taste...but when
you're behind the decks "reading the crowd" that's just something you decide
to do to break the flow..or to bring in something new. Maybe you've got a
track with a really cool intro or spoken word that you want the crowd to
hear. If you can keep the dance floor, then really who cares? Once or twice
in a 3 or 4 or 5 hour set won't hurt.

Now that whole thing with CDs... i beg to differ. Though i'm like 80% vinyl
there's several reason i rock cds:

1. the track is a promo and it's not out yet.
2. the actual producer/label gave me the music on CDR (most time i'll end up
buying the vinyl eventually)
3. the track is a "classic" and i dont want to risk travelling w/ the wax
(yes, shit does get stolen).
4. i have the vinyl already, i just put together a "compliation cd" of
"hits" so that i can have them available if the feeling is right.

Now, there ARE djs out there that play all cd-s... Frankie Feliciano and
Mark Farina (as of late). I talked to a promotor about this once and he
said that Frankie was tired of getting his shit stolen, lost, etc when he
travels. Indeed, if you're a dj that travels often, this is appealing.
cause then you can always have a "backup copy" of your music at home ready
to ship if someone does decide to jack your shit.

Even though i believe that you have to "touch" the music you play (i.e.
vinyls), i will continue to play CDRs because i feel that's what i have to
do to stay competitive. If djs continue to play all cdrs that by their
choice for whatever reasons they have... but i dont feel that they should
have to defend themselves. If they rock the shit out of a crowd from a dj
booth, and nobody sees that he was using CDRs or final scratch... then that
obviously doesn't make them less artisitic than one that uses all vinyl.
They just happen to know how to use their tools and their music really well!

Brian
