DISCLAIMER: BE WARNED! This will offend you and I do not apologize because I
have paid my cover and I feel cheated!
I am glad to know that I'm not the only one here who thinks the house scene
in LA is lacking. I love good soulful house and all I ask for is an event
once a month... please, please, please... what happened to the "For Those
Who Know" party? If you cannot find a following every week, take the parties
underground again. That is the only way to save the music! Making it more
mainstream is what's killing the music.
You cannot make mass-produced quality music, film, or art. IF YOU ARE INTO
MAKING MONEY, THEN HOUSE IS NOT FOR YOU. Choose another form of music,
something more appealing to the 18 year olds and stop trying to exploit us
househeads or our form of music. Instead of telling us to switch over to
another form of music (btw, we do listen to other forms, we just want one
night for this form of music), go and throw parties for another crowd...
which is what you are doing anyway.
Look at Shelter NYC... in no way mainstream, still underground, the best
house music I've ever heard... I've seen 21 year olds dance next to
40somthin year old garage-heads, not only do they serve alcohol but throw
barbecues on special days... they are open from 10 to noon and they only
charge $20 (and parties in LA that are only open till 3 or 4 shamelessly
charge the same)... people go there to dance and sweat and dress
accordingly... and they treat you like family... that's what I'm looking
for. I'd rather have fewer quality parties thrown by those who really want
to keep the music alive rather than those weekly cash-making parties thrown
by those who are in it for the fame and money.
I've been to dynagroove parties, I've been to Deep, and I've been to more...
in my opinion, the reason why the parties in LA suck are, in order of
relevance:
1. Bad DJs playing bad music and calling it house music.
2. Venues closing too early. I have yet to find a soulful house event where
I can show up at 2:00am and stay till noon! And I am 29!
3. Not providing a dance friendly environment. Dancing and upscale don't
work!
4. Lack of warm friendly people, lack of family... family is what keeps
people coming you fools!
I say, take it underground! Peace, Fatima.
