i know of no specific hot dj spots, just avoid anything with junior sanchez 
and remember that we east coasters have a weird affinity for wailing bitch 
vocals.   honestly, seek out some art shows and some coffeehouses, find people 
that you kinow might be into your shit and ask where something cool might be 
going down.   there is a place called the larchmont that i recommend staying at.   
it is cheap for nyc and it is clean.   there is another place on the upper 
west side that has rooms for 89 per night, disturbingly cheap.   when you get to 
nyc, grab a copy of the village voice, flip thru it and find your interests.  
 by all means, if you are artistic, go to the whitney museum and see the 
biennial - best art show ever.

as scary as people think nyc is, it really isn't.   i find la a million times 
more intimidating.   cabs in nyc are so much cheaper than here, dont be 
afraid of them - more than that, embrace the underground.   if you were into punk 
rock at anytime, go to saint marks and hang around - visit cbgbs and the 
limelite.   at the very least, you willl enjoy seing the scantilly clad folk
