>From a music production standpoint, House certainly presents its
challenges...
To make a groovin house track, you need some live elements...whether it be a
catchy vocal hook or some horns/keyboard solos or whatnot, it's got to have
that authentic musical feel...also producing a solid low end bass line isn't
that easy (unless you're stealing it which admittedly some people do)
I find when I'm making other types of music like breakbeat or more
progressive house I can get away with a lot more stuff...it's easier to use
more stock "synthy" sounds...you also can use arpeggiators and crap like
that to fill out your track...basically it's easier to finish a track
yourself without any assistance from others
House is a much more collaborative effort...unless you're supersuper
talented and can sing/play saxophone/etc all by yourself...you're going to
need guest musicians and vocalists to make something that's really
special...
I don't think it's a question of whether House is overrated...I think it's
more of an issue of producer's becoming complacent and not making the extra
effort to make their tracks hot...Producer's have gotten used to having a
certain formula that helps them sell records...furthermore they would rather
not hire guest vocalists/musicians because they'd rather keep all the money
to themselves b/c of slumping record sales...lastly the people who are
selling records are trying to release as much stuff as possible, which
obviously leads to a more mediocre product
Records just seemed more original and "bangin" 5 years ago...the producers
in the scene have all bitten each other to the point where no one's really
doing their own thing...it's going to take another group of
younger/hungrier/more risk-taking individuals to take the genre back to a
higher level
It's not about the DJ's....DJ's only play what they are given...
