[Dynagroove] Let's talk about venues...

Sounds like you getting a bad deal if you have to shell out that much money
and not get anything out of it. Most bars or clubs depending on size will
give you a percentage of the bar at the end of the night, if they know you
have pull and can pack the club The thing is you are in LA, where the only
thing people want to hear where they go out is hip-hop & rock-n-roll. These
scenes make bank at the bar because those kids are going beacuse it is hip and
not because you flew in the best DJ from Sweden to play at your event. I mean
I saw Morgan Geist play in santa monica like a month ago and there were 20
people there, the bartenders don't care because ther is no one there buying
drinks. Plus it sucks when you have to charge 21+ people at the door to get
into a club, unless you have a tight headliner DJ. Unless you go to NYC or
London where people actually care about good music and the clubs stay open
till 4am, then you are gonna always have to deal with the LA bullshit.

just a last minute reminder....here is the info again below
  _____

Hello everyone.

I am sending out this email to invite you all to come and check me out
on this coming Tuesday night. I will be playing at Focus in Orange
County. The club is located near the John Wayne Airport and I will be
playing from 9:30pm till midnight. I will be opening for David Garcia
from San Francisco. He has a very Naked Music/Miguel Migs style and my
opening set will compliment him quite well. I am planning on playing a
lot of classic tracks including stuff on Cajual, Narcotic, King Street,
MAW, Peppermint Jams, etc. It will be an opening set though, so no
'hands in the air' tracks. I haven't played in OC since prob 2001 so
this should be a real treat. Its also nice and early (for a Tuesday) so
you can still make it out, be home early and wake up for work on
Wednesday none-the-wiser.

Focus is a great club and if you haven't been there and/or haven't been
supporting them, you should. They have brought out some serious talent
including Kaskade, Marques Wyatt, DJ Heather, Mark Grant, Ian Pooley, JT
Donaldson and many more. I am really stoked to be playing at such a cool
club. DEFINITELY not the usual OC Club/OC Vibe with a bunch of
juiced-out guys and plastic girls. A really intimate vibe with good
people, a great sound system and best of all, cheap/strong drinks.

Here is the clubs info:
FOCUS - located at TAPAS in Newport Beach.

I for one would like to thank Imad and all the great
people who threw and spun at Good Day, LA. It was such
a great party, and the location I cannot rave about
enough- much props deserved. I am seriously crossing
my fingers for the next Good Day, LA 'cause I'll be
there with a corona and my dancing shoes for
sure...I'll be reliving many great memories from last
Sunday for quite a while. Great Job guys!

Tim
Greenhouse

P.S. And a special thanks to all of you who rolled out
for Lee Dubston (who dropped some epic tracks and
mixes twice that day) and Rebecca Sin (who yes-
brought out the Tech house for sure). It takes some
serious house heads to keep a party going after 8
hours of sunny dancing (and drinking (= ). We love u4
it!

Ok, let's talk about venues. In short, we at
Greenhouse need one. Actually, let me elaborate on
that...we need a GOOD one. We have several venues in
mind who are more then willing to have us do nights
with them, of coarse why wouldn't they be- with their
$300 rental fees, or $1500 bar minimums, or $150
security fees, or the $280 sound guy fee (of coarse we
have to provide our own tables and mixers)...

This has made me think a bit about being a promoter.

1) Why should an established promoter pay a fee to a
bar who obviously does not have the a) balls to take
the risk b)time or experience, or c) the money to do
their own promotions?

Yet they will glady take the $1000 bar increase a
promotor brings them as well as the $300 fees etc.
while the promotor walks home without even enough
money left in his account to pay for a taxi ride home?
When you think about it...the promotor takes on all
the risk involved in throwing a night or an
event...the promotor pays all the dj's, pays for all
the flyers and promotions, pays for gas and covers and
dedicated endless late nights promoting for the event
all to drive customers to a bar who sits back and
charges an astronomical rate for liquor and makes out
like a champ...who should really be paying who here?

Now, I don't expect any venue to pay me (let's be
realistic, the world's not that logical)...but I do
want a venue who will make it possible to throw a
quality event with excellent music and great vibes
without running costs up to a point where the promotor
(in this case myself) is forced to charge a $15 cover
(believe me, I hate this as much as the next person,
although in most cases it is the venue and the costs
incurred by them that cause these rediculous covers-
not the promotor contrary to popular belief)

Lofts, or warehouses are also of high interest. So if
you know of a place, or know someone who knows of
someone who knows a place, whatever...hit me up, and
I'll make it happen. I've got too much great stuff
just waiting for a home to sit on and do nothing
about!

peace party people,
let me know...
Tim
Greenhouse
