I thought Family and Friends was exactly like the family parties of old,
moreso than I could have imagined.. We had spent the entire day up in
Ventura at the Distant Beat beach party (if you missed this one DONT miss
the next one on Aug 20th), and then headed back to LA around 9pm for a quick
nap before our set. Got to the party around 230 and it was PACKED!! (took
about 15min to find a parking spot). Walked through the big metal roll-up
door and into the warehouse. The second room was rockin with Oscure doin his
thing breaks style.. I hadn't heard breakbeats on a big system in years so
that was pretty fun for a bit.. Definitely reminded me that the family
parties were indeed about more than just house music (remember this was
years ago when all of us were into that) ;) Anyway we ran into Marty who led
us into the main room where we would be closing out the night.. Let me tell
you I was FLOORED when we entered the room. Props everywhere, actual visual
loops playing, a HUGE dance area, and it was also packed!! I was no longer
worried that there wouldn't be much of a crowd for our 4-6am set..
I ran into old friends, met a lot of new people, and walked between the 2
rooms a bit to see who else was playing.. the non-announced lineup turned
out to be pretty fun! I saw oscure, bodyrock ben and marcus, and tony
noodles/craig law in room 2 which seemed to be the more varied room
musically. In room one it was Joe Rodriguez and Joey Bickle playing from
when we got there until 4am when it was our turn to go on.. I know Big Cee
played as well, so that still leaves a few slots open... anyone know who
else played???
Anyway, we went on and did our thing at 4, after a couple needle skips
(those inflatable cingular logo's + stanton 680's = wobble wobble!) we were
on our way... We switched off with some nice deep house and went strong
until around 630am when we saw the daylight coming in through the skylights
in the ceiling and the entire place was now illuminated!! i haven't been to
a party that late in ages, and there were still a pretty good number of
people doin thier thing!! I closed it out with Jam and Spoons Stella with
Donna Summers I Feel Love and the people weren't ready to go so Steven
Dimitri and Emi gave em a few more to get those last grooves in before
heading home to try and get some sleep!!
A huge thanks to Doug, Marty, Joe, and Joey for putting this event on. Not
one area was skimped on (Sound was huge, Location was huge and original,
Decor was top notch!) and the people who were there seemed to be thankful
for it. It was definitely a throwback to the old days, and maybe a select
few people weren't ready for it, but we were and we loved it!! Thanks for
taking a chance and giving people the opportunity to experience how these
parties used to be.. being in there that night felt like old times with a
new twist!!
Lets do it again sometime..
Zack
