Hey all,
Since I saw almost no one from this list at The Good Life last Thursday, I
figured I could give a little review, even if it is for my own club. To meet
the newly created "Rah-Rah" standard for reviews, i've made sure to add as
many personal anectodes as I could:
The day of the party started with a lot of uncertainty. Having booked
tech-house djs James Kay and Rebecca Sin, i assumed a lot of dyna-peeps, deep and
funky house fans would pass on the good life this week for the oh so many
other good Thursday possibilities. I then got word from Hoang Luu (The Blend)
that he was stuck in Kansas on biz and could not make it back for the gig.
Almost instantly after I got word from Luu, I heard from the owner of the
Bungalow. She cancelled the dj set up downstairs for the downtempo part of our
night (she felt it was a "distraction"...huh?). Gotta do what the owner wants,
y'all know that...Had to call Drew Sullivan and give him the bad news. Drew
is so cool though, he showed up anyways and he and I had a great
conversation as usual about music and of course porn...hahaha.
Thankfully, I knew it was Mr. Buddah's B-day and I asked if he would be
interested in closing out the night. Like a champ, he acquiesced. After
setting up, at 9:30 PM, we still did not have a bartender upstairs...owner had
screwed up again. they were bringing a substitute bartender but won't open until
10:00. Good Life peeps that were there already resorted to buying drinks
downstairs, which meant I get no credit for it....so be it, i said, let's just
see if anyone even shows...In addition, the venue turned on the AC oh a tad
late, so it wasn't all that cool @ the beginning.
You would think these were all omens for a bad party...Well, i don't know
what happened, but the party was Ssssslammmin!!!! People began to arrive quite
early. they got a dose of Howe Lin playing some really funky slow BPM
minimal tech, something he wanted me to hear as a possible sound we can experiment
with at GL sometime in the future...i really liked it. In doing so though,
It got somewhat bangy a bit too early, but Mike Magana came on and smoothed
it out. By 11:00 the place was already quite busy. To my great delight, I
saw many new faces I hadn't seen before. Then, a big group of Brazilians
from myspace showed up to celebrate a B-day. Like Cade said before, there is
nothing like the festive vibe that Brazilians bring to a party. They dress and
look nice, but they party widly and they dance! from there on the party
played itself out nicely, as everyone was smiling, dancing and seemingly
enjoying themselves thoroughly. James and Rebecca switched off back and forth and
were playing some extremely danceable Tech-house music...I overheard a number
of "i love her!!" shouted about during Rebecca's portions, but it was James
who impressed me the most. People should really give this type of music more
play...
For most of the night, the balcony was packed with people, smoking, drinking
and talking. Sometimes I wish it wasn't there (i always prefer seeing
people on the dance floor) but I have to admit that I even went out there for a 15
minute pause and chat. It's a very agreeable space...Heard a bunch of not
so successful pick up lines by some of my friends (who chose to hit on the one
Brazilian girl that was married...hahaha) lines like: "Hey, i know
Imad...does that make me cool enough to talk to you?" hahahaha....No worries, i
saved her from their clumsy buffooneries...
I came back in to see that Rudy C (For Those Who Know) and a couple of
friends were there hangin'. Rudy and I shared a drink and some good convo. I was
impressed that these guys were of such an open mind as far as the music was
concerned. You could see they were listening attentively and even
appreciatively even though it was not their cup of tea. Tolerance is at the root of
our scene, right? We will soon see a little "knowledge" thrown down at GL.
As is now tradition, a bunch of Patron shots were consumed (where have you
gone, PPG and CBC?). The crowd did start to dissipate slowly around 1:00PM
(there is work the next day after all) By then, Buddah had taken reign of the
booth, jazzing and funkying the music up to the great delight of the
remaining dancers. Buddah is a cool ass entertainer behind the decks. he gets INTO
it, you know? At 1:45, last call, I was to mix in the last record of the
night (Mike says it's our version of Russell Simmons' coming out on Def Poetry
and saying "thank you, good night and god bless". haha) Mind you I had 4
Patron shots and a few beers, I was given a track that I had never heard
before, and most important of all, Buddah leaves me this incredibly difficult James
Brown remix track to mix out of. Needless to say, I could barely hear what
I was doing....so I slammed the bass of the incoming track almost as soon
as I opened up the channel and took out James Brown like an assassin. We had
a good laugh about it...and the night came to a happy end...
It was fun times...Missed some of you partiers that are dear to me (you know
who you are, you Patron guzzling freaks!!) but I will see you all soon at
the going away party for someone special who is leaving us...
best,
imad
