I'd have to agree; you do have to watch out for getting too far into the
commercial spectrum, as well as getting too (for lack of a better term)
'rave-ey' sounding with electro. In an age where mc donnalds uses drum and
bass to market happy meals to their 'children 5 and up' demographic, it is
becoming increasingly common to hear cheesy popularized takes on what were
once considered 'underground' music styles.. Maybe not so underground now?
I wonder how long it will take before producers are casting for "so you
think you can dj?"

All that aside, I think the come back electro, acid and techno seem to be
making within house music is a good thing. Much of my taste for electronic
music was acquired from listening to stuff like Tyree Cooper, Maurice,
Pierre, Frankie Knuckles, Egyptian Lover, Kraftwerk, The Orb etc.. I think
one of my favorite things about house music is the way you can combine
sounds, deep bleeps anyone?

Yeah, I think that's fair. Droid and MSC were mostly minimal techno and
breakbeats. Also, nothing is commercial in the US except Hip Hop and Pop
(and
crap rock/pop) if we're only looking at radio air play.

But at a deeper level, dance music can be "commercial" in the way it is
produced. I think some of the electro I've heard has that feel: it's as if
whoever produced it did so with the intent and aim to actually get radio
play, or
at least big club floor play. They just happen not to get it because Clear
Channel, MTV and P-Diddy like stooges just won't have any of it. Certain
house producers in my opinions are guilty of that (uhum...can anyone say
Kaskade?) It doesn't mean they are bad producers, just that their music is
intentionally meant for commercial success, whether they receive radio
airplay or not.

And before anyone responds by saying: "well, everyone wants commercial
success", let me preempt: 1. of course that's true; & 2. there is a
difference
between premeditated, planned productions ("we must have a hook, we must
have a
hook") and music that is produced originally and honestly with a HOPE that
everyone else ALSO likes it enough to buy it...

Good luck with your party. I will attempt to come out for it. Of course,
if there is a west side story rumble involving the Electros, then I'm there
with my switchblade knife...watch out!!

Having been to every Droid and MilitantSexCouncil party held at the Good

doing
which is very unique and special they do tend to be more on the techno
side.
They sometimes have one electro DJ in the night and for like an hour, and
now that DJ NUROTIKA is in Europe I have notice less electro being
desplayed
at the MSC parties. Experimental yes, full on electro? I would have to say
no. And as far as electro being commercial? How is a genre commercial
when
it gets no radio play besides a once-a-blue-moon track on indie 103.1 or
KCRW.
House is way more commercial by those standards. There is a lot of music
out there to be explore. Don't sleep on it!!!

Yeah, I agree. electro is actually quite available in LA. hell the Droid
fellas and the Militantsexcounsil peeps always have a good dose of electro
in
their line-up.
