DJ MINX BIO
Jennifer Witcher a.k.a. DJ Minx, adores the fact that she has chosen a profession that allows her to mingle with Detroit's most talented people. She was inspired to spin by the famed Music Institute in Detroit. A featured DJ for the notable "Deep Space Radio" program, she she also served as on-air hostess and engineer. Her style is described as funky, powerful house, with a smudge of grace.
>From '92 - '95, as CEO of the Skyloft Gallery, Minx teamed with Jerry the Cat and Dana Keaton to develop an underground art/music gallery that served as a nexus for bringing together underexposed artists from various fields. It provided a huge opportunity for Minx to program innovative events showcasing Detroit's underground community of artists, musicians, DJs, and designers.
Every Saturday night, Minx traveled to WGPR 107.5 FM and transcended upon "Deep Space Radio". The show was headed by the innovators of techno music: "Magic" Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Eddie Fowlkes, and Derrick May. She played mixes by Kenny "Moodyman" Dixon and Stacy Pullen as well as the show's helmsmen. There were also live interviews during the show that once featured Roger Sanchez as he worked on a track at "Strong Room Studios" in England. She also voluntarily did a radio program at the University of Windsor on CJAM 91.5 FM called "Steamy Windows" once weekly playing house music by various artists locally and internationally.
In December 1996, Minx gave birth to Women on Wax, a collective of lady DJs from the Metro Detroit area. She then began working with promoters and DJs all over the country, and tours with her DJ's regularly.
>From '98 - '99, as a resident of the world- renowned Club Motor, Minx played with Basement Jaxx, Doc Martin, and Afrika Bambatta just to name a few. She now has a once monthly residency at the Velvet Room in Windsor, Ontario playing funky house and hip hop on occasion.
In July 1999, Minx joined the Dynamix booking agency roster in Germany. Since joining, she has been on tour to Paris, Berlin, and Cancun. Minx has also traveled to Switzerland and Spain via the Knee Deep roster out of Berlin and is now on tour overseas at least once a year.
When the first-ever Detroit Electronic Music Festival (D.E.M.F.) hit in May 2000 in downtown Detroit, with over 1.5 million people in attendance, it had an incredible impact on Minx's career. Since then, she's played at Toronto's Film Lounge, Club Ohm in Portland, and been featured on Much Music's Electric Circus weekly Dance Show.
More recently, Minx is working on her 8th release for the newly formed Women On Wax Recording label, WOW 006 and 007 are due to drop in July. She's also done remixes on Soiree Records and is also on "X-MIX", released on the !K7 label, introducing Kevin Saunderson as he mixes hard house and techno music. Her performances have been stirring souls to a boil throughout the U.S. and beyond.
Dj Genisis Bio
DJ Genesis has been moving and shaking in the underground house music scene for many years. Her musical beginnings are deeply rooted in classical and jazz music where she was trained since the age of 7 to play the flute. She later moved on to learn classical piano, and valve trombone.
During her time in the United States Air Force Monica was stationed in Washington D.C. and met fellow Airman and turntablist "DJ Rags" (DMC West Coast Champion 1998) who taught her the basics of DJing. After leaving the military in 1997 Monica decided to take DJing more seriously, and started a weekly residency DJing at open mic nights at the Kaffa House. She spun everything from jazz, to hip hop, to jungle. She was then asked to join forces with the Talking Drum crew for their weekly drum and bass night at Bar Nun. After that two ladies named Aoesi and Clark invited her to spin for their weekly residency at State of the Union where Monica aka Genesis would spin jungle and house music. This night eventually became a weekly residency alongside Sam The Man Burns. The night was called Underground Soul Solution. Underground Soul Solution Sunday's became a legendary house night in D.C. that ran for over 5 years, and featured such guests as Colonel Abrams, Bryan Gee (V Recordings),
and
Ultra Nate.
One of her early accomplishments in the dance music scene was an all-female DJ tour called "Set It Off," that featured DJs from Chicago, NY, and Houston, that Genesis conceptualized, promoted and managed. Co-headliners Heather Heart and DJ Heather collaborated in this historical tour, billed as the "first ever female DJ tour to hit the US,". This tour hit clubs in Toronto, San Jose, Houston, Las Vegas, Chicago, D.C. Portland and Seattle. In addition, she also was one of the few female DJs invited to play at the 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Fest (DEMF), as well as at the 2003 & 2004 Movement Festival; She is the only woman featured on the 2004 Movement Festival Compilation. Her excellent mixing skills and tenacious studio work earned her a slot in the 2003 Red Bull Music Academy in Cape Town South Africa. Genesis is one of 60 who were chosen from over 20,000 applicants globally.
Always in the studio, Genesis has released a variety of songs and sounds for Gabriel Records, Eighteenth Street Lounge and Psychostasia Records. Her release on Dynamite Soul, "Back In The Middle," caught the attention of the global dance music media and was highlighted for its deep house / "neo-soul" flavor in magazines like iDJ, XLR8R, Jockeyslut and many more. Currently, Genesis is working on her first full-length album. She has recently teamed up with Detroit producer Omar S. for the first release on her own imprint Subgroundz Records with a remake of the disco classic Tonight Is The Night which was originally written and performed by Betty Wright. Currently she is working on her new fall release schedule which will feature the track "Hush", sung by Omega and produced by Genesis. Remixes of this release where done by Amp Fiddler and DJ Dez of Slum Village.
