Some good points made here.. The first being DJ's that don't know how to use
the equipment given to them!! When we were doing TribeRadio at Vibeflow
studios it used to blow my mind how many dj's would just show up, flip the
tonearm weights to reverse, and proceed to beat the shit out of the mixer!!

DJ's, one of the BEST things you can teach yourself is how to properly setup
and use the equipment! It's going to make you sound better. Buy a pair of
needles to travel with (though I wouldn't buy any ortofone carts as they
have that dreaded contact issue if you take them on/off the tonearm
frequently!) and then learn to properly balance a needle/tonearm setup. That
will fix a LOT of your skipping/cueing and distortion issues. Do yourselves
a favor and read this section of the Technics 1200 FAQ:

That said, I personally love rotary mixers as well. We've been using the
2016 at our $5 Dollah Funk$ parties for a couple of years now and I think
not only is it smoother to mix on (for me anyway, some dj's styles will
obviously favor a fader style mixer) but it also (being a rane) has a very
noticeable warmth and heavier sound that comes out of it. I don't mind
playing on a pioneer at all (I've played on MUCH worse, you wouldn't believe
it!) and as long as I've got 2 working turntables (1200's please!), a
working mixer, and a good monitor or two that I can control the levels on,
we should be good to go!

If the DJ's respected the 'red means stop' rule on the levels, the sound
guys wouldn't max the mixers out with their racks still so low, and then the
soundsystem would sound better because we'd have a little bit of headroom!
It'll take awhile but I'm sure if we all learn to respect the red we can get
a little bit of a trust system going between us and the sound companies, and
the world will be a happier place, with cleaner bass!

One last note, Vanyo (forcefield soundsystems) had $5 Dollah Funk$ straight
BUMPIN last Saturday night, and for that we thank him!! Communication is
key, he tells us stay out of the red, and we stay out of the red!

My $1.99

Zack
