that was a great article Tony printed. i'll add my short story on the
history. pierre & spanky used to work on house tracks together in thge 80's.
pierre got a hold of a 303 to make basslines with. he literally discovered
the
"acid" patterns by accident. turns out, the 303 had lots of random patterns,
and
if tweaked right (actually if tweaked wrong), you'd get these crazy "acid"
patterns. Anyway, spanky threw down a beat, and the first real acid track,
Acid
Trax was born. But Pierre had mixed feelings about the track...he wasn't
sure if it was great or just crazy. (you gotta remember that nobody ever
heard
anything like that before, and it was radically different from any sounds that
were being played....best comparison i can give is when my best friend came to
visit me after i moved from Chicago to LA, we went for a drive...i popped a
tape in the stereo that had a jungle track on it...when he heard the super
fast
beats he quickly ejected the tape cause he thought the tape player was eating
my cassette....the jungle beats sounded that crazy to him).
Anyway, Pierre still saw something in the track, so he took it to the Music
Box (the club my label is named after) and gave it to ron hardy. ron dropped
it on the spot, and the floor cleared. and the floor at the box NEVER clears.
never ever. people at the box worshipped ron. ronnie could play polka
music, from an old, dusty, scratched record....backwards and at the wrong
speed,
and the floor wouldn't clear. but somehow acid trax cleared the floor.
pierre
just figured it was over. but ronnie's drugged out ass liked the track. and
if ronnie liked something he was gonna make everyone else like it too. ronnie
played that track every hour until finally by the...i can't remember exctly,
but maybe the sixth or seventh time, the crowd went fucking crazy for it.
this was during one of ronnie's crazy 72 hour marathons where except for maybe
a
tiny break here or there (where dj rush, and on a few rare occassions, myself,
would fill in) ronnie would play 3 days straight. he must've dropped the
track at least 10 more times that weekend. after that "acid" was an official
form of house. i remember leaving the box and going straight to school on
monday
humming acid sounds. crazy shit. and who knows if it ever would've existed
if ronnie hadn't liked it.
to any DJ's that dig on acid, i highly recommend you search out Acid Trax on
Trax records. Larry Sherman (owner of Trax) was, and is, a snake.....he
continually represses the whole Trax catalog so i'm sure you can track it down
pretty easily...unfortunately, Pierre & Spanky won't see a dime. But it's an
amazing record with a lot of history behind it, and it still drives crowds
crazy.
love my acid,
Scott K.
