LA
house scene can be fully represented worldwide as it should!

since it was sorta on-topic of "production paraphernalia", which is what the
rest of this email is a reply to, ill mention i have FOR SALE a behringer
ultra-dyne pro (dsp 9024) digital 24-bit dual-dsp mainframe. its a dynamics
processor it's capible of multi band compression by splitting the signal into
6 bands from low range to high range and running compression on each, as well
as other features like leveling and i think it even does real time
analization
of signal.. i think.. anyway ill let it go for $175 if anyone is interested
its
fully working i just have other gear that does the same doo doo.
so heres a list of stuff i use in my small home studio here (NOT FOR SALE)
and how much i paid (might be helpful to the bargain conscious consumer,
lots of used stuff from ebay and haggling with local music shops for
trade-ins as well as employee discounts at places like guitar center helped!)
emu esi-2000 sampler upgraded w/ scsi hard drive and ram upgrade; $125 ebay
korg s3 rhythm workstation (mostly used to sequence sampler); $free from dad
yamaha RM1X sequencer/drum machine/programmable synth; $200 ebay
roland sp-808 groovesampler; $225 ebay
roland synth plus 10 (same guts as an old juno with different
interface); $275 local music shop

roland vm-3100 12 channel mixer and digital audio converter; $300 ebay
t.c. electronics tripple c stereo multi-band mastering compressor;
$300 musicians friend sale
edirol (roland) da-2496 interface; $450 demo closeout at sam ash
event TR8N studio monitors (pair); $330 employee discount guitar center

i like a little analogue and a little digital, like when i do event sound i
almost always go with all analogue gear i just like the sound better for
playing live because you can get the voltage pumping just right and get
a really punchy sound without a harsh digital clip, but in the studio its all
about digital recording, unless you're rich, then you can afford the gear.
one thing with digital recording i might note, for increased fidelity dont
convert your signals from digital to analogue back to digital if you can,
instead keep your sample rate locked through a digital chain. use digital in
and out if its available if a device is already digital no sense in
resampling
to use analogue. as for specifically making house i think you can make
it with almost anything it just depends on how you use it. samplers are
great though, you do sound design on your computer and dump all your fresh
sounds to your sampler, rather than using the same pre-set group of sounds
that you you'll inevitably hear on so many records. samplers are good for
other things too, if you're into that sorta thing.
love the juno sounds too if you want a classic house synth for a
reasonable price
get a juno series synth. cant go wrong. i used to have an electribe myself
but
it was the old one before they came out with tubes, the sampling model,
those were kinda fun actually.. just too limited.. sold it to buy my
sp-808 which
is also limited in other ways 4 sample polyphony argh but its more of
a loop sequencer
and real time effector really..
