Soundlab Sundays brings a much-needed fresh sound to the Westside. Started
in October 2004 by Jason Bentley (Metropolis, KCRW) and Paris-born newcomer
Benjamin Lebrave, Soundlab was conceived as an original outlet for new
musical trends within the electronic genre. Since its inception, Soundlab
has hosted a slew of internationally acclaimed DJs and producers such as:
- Morgan Geist (Environ, Metro Area, NYC), leading figure of neo-disco.
- Thomas Fehlmann (Kompakt, Plug Research, Berlin), veteran techno producer
and The Orb's silent partner.
- Daedelus (Ninja Tunes, Plug Research, Mush), IDM producer
- Ark (Perlon, Circus Company, Karat, PIAS, Paris) and Krikor (Rootdown,
Karat, Paris), French Minimal House producers at the forefront of their
scene.
- Ryan Elliott (Spectral, Ghostly, Detroit) and Broker / Dealer (Spectral,
Ghostly, SF), American IDM / Techno Wunderkinds.
- Alexkid (F Com, Paris), famed French House producer.
- [a]pendics.shuffle and Konstantin Gabbro (Orac, Adjunct, LA), some of LA's
finest minimal techno producers.

On regular nights Benjamin Lebrave shares the decks with DJ and producer
Kamahele (Undertow, SF) at barcopa in Santa Monica. In the bar's dark space
the duo creates an eclectic atmosphere by pushing under-the-radar gems
ranging from downtempo, hip hop and dancehall to minimal house, techno and
electro

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Nigerian Afro-beat star and political activist,
died of AIDS-related heart failure related to AIDS on August second. His
brother and physician, Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, announced the death at press
conference in Lagos on August 3rd, and attributed the death to the "many
complications arising from the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome."
Fela was an African legend, a musician whose music reached far beyond his
own environs and created a rare legacy of not only music, but rumor and
speculation both within his own country and throughout the world. founded a
political party called Movement of the People (MOP) after Nigeria's
militarily squashed civilian rule in 1979. During the ensuing years his
music and lifestyle became a constant challenge to the authorities, writing
lengthy musical diatribes against the government, and founding a sort of
commune called "The Shrine" that was purported to not only be a source of
anti-government activity, but a place of sexual and social debauchery that
flew in the face of the conservatism of the ruling party. His bouts with the
military regimes of his country often landed him in jail, which only spread
his fame further out into the world.
The legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be debated for years. He was both a
renowned sexual reprobate and a musical genius, a political gadfly and an
insightful social commentator. - Cliff Furnald

NextAid is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to creating
sustainable solutions for African children orphaned as a result of AIDS. By
partnering with various organizations in the production of music events and
other awareness raising activities, NextAid channels emergency and long-term
aid to African children in need.

NextAid is committed to building a multi-purpose center for Youth With A
Vision.  The project broke ground in July of this year. Intended to showcase
green building design, the earth-friendly sustainable center in Dennilton,
South Africa will serve as a template for many such centers throughout
Africa. The multi-purpose center will be a place where resources can be
concentrated, where aid can be efficiently distributed, where environmental
education will be emphasized, and where the youth can reach their individual
and collective potential.
