When I made the cross-country trip (mostly for college), I usually
shipped most of the records in double-boxed cardboard boxes (with
bubble-wrap around the outside of the records, and packing peanuts
between the boxes), and then brought the rest in the car (or plane),
bringing them inside at night, or when I went inside for extended
periods of time.

But since you're just going to AZ, I'd suggest doing the drive at night
if possible. Just leave at 4 or 5 PM; driving at night sucks, but your
records should stay nice and cool.

If that's not possible, keep important records in the cab of the u-haul
- as long as you're comfortable and the records aren't in direct
sunlight, they should be Ok. Those soft record bags with some thermal
padding should help a little too.
