I gotta chime into the promoter booking the unheard of DJs that are
amazing.
We do this all the time at focus (maybe not SUPER unheard of, but
still). We take a lot of chances and a lot of the times we end up losing
money because believe it or not these unheard of acts still want a lot
of money (I have no idea why). On top of that most of the awesome
unheard of acts are from out of state or even worse out of the country.
This involves international flights as well as extended hotel stays if
they are touring + their insane DJ Fee (because apparently the US is the
cheapest when it comes to paying for gigs compared to Europe and Asia)
Anyways it's tough to do because it costs a lot of money to keep the
night going & as far as getting security & a venue "for the love of
music" it's pretty much out of the question :-). So I understand why a
lot of promoters play it safe, but I don't get excited about events any
more if they have the same old lineup. Somebody needs to go big and
risky like can SOMEBODY bring out Joey Negro already!
Anyways as far as focus goes we book some reliable talent that will draw
heads there is no doubt about it, but we always like to bring new
artists we think are worth seeing into focus. Some artists we like to
bring in that may not be doing double platinum album sales: M3, Chuck
Love, Sir Piers, Q-Burns (this Tuesday), Honey Dijon (Sept 5th) & a grip
more that I can't think of right now.
OH and as far as staying somewhat on topic, where's the beef?
Can we not just enjoy music? Why do we have to be "big stupid idiots"
for liking specific sounds? I enjoy a diverse range of music (thus
focus' lineup is eclectic), but to say one area breathes house and
others just suck at it? I look at it as a great diverse area of house.
It's all house to me, just different subgenres of it. I personally like
what other areas have to offer quite a bit more than the east coast
vibe.
I don't understand why in this scene there are so many snobs. Why not
have fun? I swear that's what a "party" is all about. And isn't that
what we are attending? Seriously, go out and enjoy yourself and have an
open mind.
P.S. Just because it starts somewhere doesn't mean it's always going to
be the best, for example Yahoo pioneered search engines as we know them
today, but...
