(There was a great thread about something similar on this list a couple
years back - but so far I haven't been able to dig it out of the
archives or my old sent mail.)
There's a difference between choosing not to mix and not "learn[ing] to
mix". Ultimately, the goal is to make people dance, and I think Mancuso
does a great job of that. I didn't find his style distracting at all.
For the style of music he plays, mixing doesn't even really make sense.
He intentionally doesn't mix because he has a lot of respect for the
music he's playing.
DJing isn't just about mixing and your record collection - it's also
about programming, and I think that's probably one of the hardest things
about it.
Maybe he's a little kooky and a bit self-indulgent, but you have to give
the guy respect - and not just for "being one of the pioneers of our
music" (and anyway, isn't that enough?).
Interestingly, I heard him manage a couple of pretty great transitions
at the LA party without even using headphones.
