My friend Toddley approached me nearly two weeks ago to ask if I wanted to
go to Hawaii with him. His friend Ruby booked him to play records at her
weekly party called Casa in Honolulu on March 4th. After looking into it, I
was able to find a fairly cheap plane ticket, and work gave me few days off.
So I accepted the offer, and like that-BOOM- I was chillin' with him and an
Island local named Keone on a beautiful secluded beach in back country
somewhere. It was stunning, to say the least.

While catching some sun, we talked with keone about old island superstition,
surfing, and DJ Heather. It was a beautiful thing. Apparently there are
there are some kids out there doing stuff with this house music shit. Ruby,
who once lived in LA for while, is one of those Kids. Like I said, Casa is
her party, but other parties are going on at spots like The Living Room and
Next Door. Since I arrived on Oahu on a Saturday, Casa was the only party I
got to check out. It's at a venue called Bliss. Normally it's a Sunday night
event, however this particular week it was on Saturday.

I was pleasantly surprised by the the two opening DJ's. They knew their
shit. They were droppin some heat, some familiar, some not. It was pouring
rain so the crowd was a little slow to build. But after 11:30 or so, there
was a steady stream of soaked heads coming thru. Toddley went on at midnight
and by this time I'm feelin a good buzz. Of course I was being comp'd New
Castles all night, but I was truly feeling high from the energy of the
crowd. Smiles everywhere, people were house steppin and breakin there. HARD.
Eyes closed, just groovin'. It did my soul good to witness it.

Yes, I know Hawaii is in the US and it's not some foreign country, but
honestly as a first timer, it was a very foreign land. Being a white boy, I
was in the minority, and a stranger to these kids. I stuck out, but no one
seemed to care. For real, at one point I accidentally backed into a table
and spilled a drink on a kid's pants. I hadn't realized what I did until a
few minutes later. I asked if I spilled the drink, the kid said yes, I said
when, he said when you were dancing, I said did any get on you? He said it
did. His crotch was wet, I apologized over and over and he insisted that it
wasn't a big deal... WHAT?!

The vibe there so chill and mellow; the music Toddley was bangin out, was
anything but. He was giving them a great sample of LA underground flavor.
None of that pop-house shit, the tracks he dropped were danky and dirty.
Nasty shit. The kids there were going off, howling and shaking there heads
and jumping into dance circles. Toddley played a truly exceptional set. I'm
not just saying that cos he's a homie of mine, he had me movin' a majority
of the night . You guys woulda been proud.

Since there are only a few scattered parties on that island, the heads there
were hungry for the stuff Toddley was playing. They were all super eager to
talk to me about LA and the clubs here and other DJ's. During the night, as
I sat back and watched I felt truly blessed, as a music lover, to live in a
city where parties are poppin' all the time. Almost every night really. At
the club or undergrounds. The kids on this island have little choose from.
But with folks like Ruby, I think a mini revolution could be started there.
House music all night long, fuckin aloha style.
