Joplin nailed a lot of good points. I've been booking more gigs outside of
LA recently and the difference when you're not the "local" is pretty
substantial.

We're spoiled in LA by having not only a huge pool of locals that can hang
with the out of towners but also enough events going on to where we all
get to play on a pretty regular basis. This also hurts us due to
oversaturation. Without a big headliner you constantly fight to convince
people that your party isn't "just another party" happening on a saturday
night. People show up to show up and dont let go and have fun which can
prevent a great party from really taking off and getting that vibe that
everyone strives for.

I have a feeling it would be similar to how it was back in the day if some
of our LA locals left and relocated. When DJ Dan left LA for SF it was
like all of the sudden everyone was all about DJ Dan and trying to get him
to come back and play a gig in LA. Dont know what you've got til its gone
I guess??

I think the "locals" can survive by standing out, if you're booked twice
in a week or weekend, make sure you're giving each gig something
different, stand out and dont get lazy.. That's a big one in my book. I
always try to change things up if I'm playing locally over the course of a
week or two. Have fun, make people dance, that's what we're all here for
anyway.

CD's. I love them, it's a chance to tell a story and play stuff that might
not work on the dancefloor in a party atmosphere. I wonder if people even
listen to them anymore?? MP3's, Podcasts, Streaming at work/home? How do
you guys want your music?

My 3 bux.
Zack
