amy, you know i love you, so don't take anything here personally. i don't think my answer reads offensively at all, but sometimes the lack of emotion with text can be misunderstood, so i'm just letting you know that is a straightforward answer to your question:
"I would love to hear from those who did go to the most recent SD what made
it "well worth" $20. I would guess that this discussion is of interest to
others on this list, particularly promoters planning future events. It
might do some people good to hear what paying party-goers think makes a
party worth paying for!"
not trying to sound conceded but i know the promoters pretty well, and i'm guessing that, if i asked, i would probably be added to the guest list. but in all the years that these parties have been happening, i have never asked. i always show up with an average of 5 or 6 people (8 for this last one), and i pay.
it's hard to say what makes a party worth $20...that's very subjective obvously. i can say that the sound and lighting are almost always perfect, which, to me, is very rare. it's hard to explain, but when you hear amzing music, on an amazing system, it's chilling.? and the music really needs no explanation...the music speaks for itself,
some people only like chunky house, some only like soulful joints. everybody got their something, right?? : )? so, obviously the music (which can get pretty eclectic) isn't gonna be for everybody...but if it IS your thing (and it definitely is mine), and you realize that aside from these events there are very very few other events like this happening in LA, then you don't risk losing a good thing.
sure it would be nice to not drop so much money for a party. but most of us (especially me) aren't 18 anymore...we ain't rich, but we got a few bucks to spend onsomething we think is quality. i know it's cliche but you only live once, and life is just made up of a bunch of moments, hopefully postive and memorable. i've personally had many great moments at these parties...and i wanna have more, so that's where i choose to spend my money.
and we all should remember that the promoters spend tons of time arranging these things (finding venues, organizing details, making flyers, buying supplies, decorating, etc). there are a million dj's on this list, so i'm sure you can back me up when i say that the dj's spend countless hours searching for music to present to the people. then you have your lighting guys, sound guys, bartenders, door people, security, etc.? and even though everyone loves the music, they all still have bills to pay.?
i would love to never have to pay for a party. but for something like this, i want the people that make it happen to feel that this is a fun AND profitiable event to produce. i wanna see it keep going...for selfish reasons. so i happily pay my $20.? : )
love & music,
Scott K.
