[Dynagroove] shady promoters?

I try and stay away from the "Business" Side of things because i really
do just enjoy doing the party (focus), however for a lot of promoters
and DJs it is a business and a living for them.
Some things i CAN understand are when you are in demand as a DJ /
Producer you need to charge X amount of dollars to make sure your time
spent away from your studio / family / home is worth your while. Also
most artists will not play within the same area within a month or so to
make sure they don't saturate their name in said market. These artists
need to get paid what they agreed to and as a promoter you can decide
next time weather or not you can offer the same fee, more, less or even
have them back at the event, BUT they need to get paid what you agreed
to for that gig.
As far as promoters needing to make money on an event, there are 2 ways
to look at it. A lot of people spend a LOT Of time working on putting
together a top notch show making the day of the event sometimes a 24
hour day of work + all the work leading up to the event. It would only
be fair that they get something for their time especially if they do a
good job with what they do and you want more of it.
As party goers we should really feel great about paying the cover
charge. It supports the promoter as in HOPEFULLY allows him to first
break even and second maybe make a little bit of money. It also supports
that DJ in allowing him / her to command a higher fee or at the minimum
a repeat performance at the promoter's next event.
Anyways about the whole situation, if the artists and staff didn't get
paid in full then that would be by my definition, shady. Weather or not
a promoter loses or makes money on the event is completely on their
shoulders unless something like a percentage is agreed to with the
artists ahead of time.
P.S. I know some may think that the public discussion of this wouldn't
be very P.C., but I for one appreciate it. Situations that just get
swept under the rug are no good for anybody and knowing people aren't
afraid to speaker up will help keep people honest. It also gives you
opinions and information helping to make future decisions on weather or
not to work with somebody in the future.
