Wow, I don't know how this went from being about Paul Johnson to me, but
thank you guys for the kind words. Paul really did amaze me, though. The
last time I saw him was 10 years ago at Starscape in Baltimore -- the
biggest rave on the east coast, and he actually headlined it above all the
other trance/techno acts, along with DC/Bmore icons Feelgood and Scott
Henry. And believe me, house at that time never used to upstage trance and
techno. Up til then I had never seen him, only listened to his 6EX mixtape
series, and I thought... how would he do on a main stage to over 5k people,
when all they want to hear is trance? Paul effortlessly went up and became
the highlight of the evening. He schooled the youngsters as well as myself,
and brought down the house. After that he went on to play the DC area
pretty frequently, til he stopped touring because of heatlh issues and
physical limiations.

I would probably credit Paul (and maybe the late 90s version of Charles
Feelgood) for showing me the way to rock a party -- energetic, creative,
tactical, and aggressive mixing of a song selection that should include a
healthy balance of party vibes, proper underground goodies, and a dose of
house history 101.

Fast fwd to last Saturday at Balance, after nearly 10 years of not touring,
Paul motherfuckin JOHNSON was in our own backyard, doin the damn thing!!
Let me tell you, he hasn't skipped a beat since back in the day. Cool and
collected, he managed to take us on a journey while absolutely beating the
pants off of King King lol! Dude was on FIRE!! And the feeling was
there...you could see it on everyone's face. "That's really Paul Johnson in
LA!!" It was a truly special evening, and Paul couldn't be a nicer guy.

When you say the word legend, it can mean many different things. There are
technically a lot of legends in our scene, and they're usually one of two
things -- 1) legendary for the records that they made 2) legendary for their
dj skills. Paul is unique in that he is legendary for BOTH. I have all the
audio from the night recorded, thanks to Mikey, Gelly, and Dave for lending
their recording device, going thru it to edit and upload to a server.
