Yup, the Hitchhikers books are pretty damn good, but not, IMHO, the
best Douglas Adams has done.  That'd be Last Chance to See, written
with Mark Carwardine - *definitely* recommended reading.  Also Adams'
other books - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, The Long Dark
Teatime of the Soul, and The Meaning of Liff.  If you can get your
hands on a recording of the original Hitchhikers radio series it's
well worth having a listen to as well...

As for other ones... Terry Pratchett is a definite.  Good Omens,
written with Neil Gaiman (mentioned here recently, IIRC), and his
entire Discworld series (comic fantasy - flat, magical world on the
back of a giant tortoise) are all extremely good books.  There's
currently 20-odd books in the series, but they're all pretty much
stand-alone books, so pick one towards the beginning somewhere and get
into it... parts of it are rather Grooish, and it's all damn funny.
