     Chad,

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but please get your facts
     straight! :)

You state that MAD is now accepting ads "for the first time ever".

FACT: MAD regularly accepted ads from issues 1 to 28 (even after it
turned into magazine format with issue 24). MAD has periodically
accepted ads since then. Just off the top of my head, the following
companies have advertised in MAD (most during the 1960s, 1970s, and
1980s, but some as recently as the past five years):

        First Software
        Big Top Records
        RCA
        United Artists
        JC Penney
        Little Brown and Co.
        Spencer Gifts
        Parker Brothers (numerous times)

There may be others, but I don't have my issues in front in me. But the
point is, this is NOT the first time MAD has accepted ads, regularly or
        otherwise.

You also believe that "Gaines is spinning in his grave".

FACT: Two things to consider. First, Gaines sold MAD long before he
passed away and gave up any rights to make decisions on advertising,
etc. Gaines was a businessman (and a very successful one) and he knew
when he sold MAD that it might mean that advertising might become a part
of MAD, but he accepted that fate (if he didn't like it, then he
wouldn't have sold MAD!). Second, Dick DeBartolo, one of Gaines'
closest friends and the Creative Consultant at MAD, posted a very
logical explantation for why MAD is accepting advertising and says that
Gaines would NOT be spinning in his grave...Gaines would rather see MAD
continue with advertising than die without. And MAD is dying...it used
to have a circulation of over 2.1 million...it now stands at 230,000 and
continues to decline at an alarming rate. If one of Gaines' closest
friends says Gaines would not be spinning in the grave, I would give
that opinion a lot of weight (no pun intended given Gaines' girth)!

        Just my opinion!

        Mike S.

I meant to bring this up yesterday...

I understand that (for the first time ever) there will be advertisements
in this upcoming issue of MAD. Not jut _an_ advertisement... 11 pages of
them! I'm appalled and disgusted & truly believe Gaines is spinning in his
grave. What do you guys think?
