I am not an isolationist. It's impossible for a country as economically =
powerful as we are to be isolationist. It's also a bad idea under any =
circumstances. And I did not say, nor mean to imply, that we should =
close our eyes to the rest of the world. =20
(It seems to me we spearheaded the halt of "ethic cleansing" (i.e. =
killing Muslims) in the Balkins, and the primary instigator of the =
killings is in prison awaiting trial for war crimes, but nobody wants to =
remember that because: 1) No oil is involved, 2) it doesn't serve =
anyone's current agenda, and 3) Clinton did it and it worked.) But I =
digress. =20
The point I tried to make is that we are never as far away from the kind =
of barbarism that took place in Nigeria as we like to think we are. =
And it is more important for us to be on guard about what goes on within =
our own borders than to point fingers at what goes on within others. =
The latter may be important in many, many circumstances, it's just that =
the former is MORE important. Especially in these days where the =
ignorant are always looking for an excuse to hate someone and the =
powerful are always looking for a way to exploit the ignorant to achieve =
their ends. -Gary G.=20
Garry concludes:=20
So while the combination of stupidity and intolerance that lead to 200 =
deaths in Nigeria was horrible and should be condemned, Americans need =
to=20
spend more energy doing everything they can to keep their own house in =
order=20
and not let our own intolerance, misunderstanding, and fear lead us to =
doing=20
things as a nation that our children and grand children will be =
ashamed of.=20
-------------->Isolationism? I agree we have a lot of work to do in =
our own country, but I disagree that means we should close our eyes to =
the rest of the world. We have a lot of bad going on in our country, no =
doubt, but we ain't got nothing like this. =20
