I generally just lurk on this list, but being a Beatle maniac as well as a
Grooper I have to correct this. No offense intended.

"Free as a Bird" was a demo that John Lennon recorded around 1977, which Yoko
Ono provided to the three "surviving" Beatles during the Anthology project.
Paul George and Ringo then added additional vocals and instrumentation to the
framework. This is why John's vocals sound so ethereal. This info also appears
in the liner notes to Anthology (1).
The same thing applies to "Real Love", the other "new" Anthology song.
Technically they're not Beatle Songs, they're John Lennon demo songs that have
been completed by his mates.
