I know that my sister goes around to the various
libraries around town every couple of months and she
collects all the books that the library is
discontinuing or they have more than they want of
donated books or they don't want any of them.  She
then goes through them and finds any she might want to
read, lets the family pick through them also (can't
say no to free books), and takes the rest to the Youth
Ranch, Salvation Army or other places like that for
the books to be sold or given out through those
organizations.
Maybe that is what happens to the books you never see.
 Check the Salvation Army store shelves.
