I am fortunate to live in a corner of the world with a wonderful library
system, but I know some folks that have found an even better alternative.
They started their own. Nothing fancy, just a comfortable room with lots of
books. When their friends get rid of books, they check with this couple
first. Each book is labeled according to good ol' Dewey decimal, and you can
take a book out if you like. No late fees, but you can't take out another
until you bring the first one back.

I would never want to volunteer to do that much work, but they have. I
applaud them for it. They have built a good home for old books. They know
every person who comes, and can often include a cup of tea or a chat when
you visit.

It isn't perfect, but it proves that we don't always need to rely on people
we've never seen or met for library services. I wouldn't open my garage to
my friends, but I know someone who would. maybe you do too.
