Hi Folks!
Thought I would send a message that didn't have anything to do with cards.
Of course Sergio is a SUPERSTAR!!!! He is not an "also." It's interesting
to me that a number of cartoonists who ARE household names, such as Matt
Greoning and Gary Larson, always mention Sergio as one of their primary
influences and Stan Sakai cannot get two sentences into telling how Usagi
Yojimbo started without mentioning Sergio's encouragement and advice.
I once asked Sergio why he didn't do a daily single panel cartoon for the
newspaper because newspaper cartoons are what really make people famous.
The answer he gave me was two fold. First, he said newspaper editors did
not generally like wordless gags. (Some of Larsen's are wordless, but most
have some text as part of the gag) Second, he said he did not want to be
more famous than he was. His level of fame is just right for him. He said
when you are really famous like Charles Schulz or Gary Larsen, everyone is
always bugging you.
I found that to be a fascinating perspective.
Take care all -Gary G.
