That's the Fighting Fantasy books.
Very big they were - lots of spin offs and copycats. They were very 
popular amongst the role-playing crowd.

((I always thought the Fighting Fantasy books were a copycat of the Flying
Buffalo Tunnels & Trolls solitaire adventures, since we came out with them
first. ))
