[Groop] Movie voices

Hi Folks!

OK, first, it's not clear whether it's going to be live action or a cartoon or whatever they call how they did Shrek, although the implication seems to be live action.

Actually, that's not first. First, we've got to remember that this movie is not guaranteed. Mark has pointed out many times in his columns that many, many "sure things" never get past first base. He tells one story where he got paid for a screenplay (with which he bought his house!) that never made it off the shelf.

But the good side is that the term "selling the rights" is a little misleading because Sergio & Mark are writing the screenplay and are also executive producers (that spells "Control") in exchange for which I would guess they gave up some up front cash. And in fact Mark refers to the arrangement as more of a partnership on his weblog. But they do have the same attorney as George "Grillmaster" Foreman, so it's probably a good deal for them no matter what happens.

OK, so if it's live action, Sergio has always said he would like to use a relative unknown actor so the emphasis would be on Groo and not the actor. I believe they almost had a deal involving Chris Farley as Groo (relatively unknown outside of SNL fans), but then he dropped dead. Although I would prefer animation of some kind because that's how I think of Groo-he is so cartoony-I completely trust Mark & Sergio's judgement on such things. Maybe, for example, a cameo by Cher as Dakarba is a good idea and maybe not. I don't know. Mark's been in the biz for 30 years and whatever he thinks sounds great to me.

If it's animated (computer or old fashion), well then Mark is really in his element even more than in movies. He knows everyone and everyone knows and respects him. Mark has said that Paul Winchell would be his choice for Pal. I don't recall anything else except that Frank Welker did Groo in a short demo, but I seem to recall Mark saying he wouldn't be Groo in a full length cartoon. Whoever they hire to do the voices will be perfect.

The only thing I do know for sure is that if there is eventually a movie, I will be at the first showing if humanly possible AND there will be a whole slew of Groo Stuff that I will have to track down and will probably have to fight a whole new cadre of movie stuff collectors for!!!! (Oh well, Claire didn't really need to go to college....)

Take care all -Gary G.

PS Sorry for the long, relatively coherent post. I'll try not to let it happen again

So who would we like to voice over Groo?
