It sounds like the old "Mauna Kea is the highest mountain on earth"
controversy again. It all goes to how you measure the highest. There
are three main contenders, Everest; the highest above sea level, Mauna
Kea; measured from its ocean base to summit is actually higher than
Everest (if you consider sea level the base of the Himalayas) , and the
point furthest from the centre of the earth, which is Mount Chimborazo
in Ecuador. Because of the equitorial bulge of the earth (including the
level of the sea) its summit is actually just a little less than 3 km
further from the center of the earth than the summit of Everest. I
think the top poster is referring to Mauna Kea, but since it tops out
at almost 14,000 ft above sea level you can leave the swin fins behind
when you go to plant your Groo poster on top.
And I know Larry wasn't padding his postings because he didn't give us
a weekly or daily countdown on "Talk like a pirate day". I completely
missed it last year.
