I posted this edited down review in the Main message board at
www.kongisking.net; I also posted the unedited chock full of spoilers
version there in the Spoilers Forumm (where else?)
-------------------------------------
I absolutely loved Peter Jacksons King Kong!
You cant go in with the expectation that this will be Coopers Kong
with updated special effects, this is an original movie very much
inspired by, based upon, influenced by, Coopers 1933 original; however
it is as different from KK33 as KK76 is, and as different to KK76,
KKLives, KKvsGodzilla, Konga, APE, KK Escapes, Queen Kong... well, you
get the picture. Beast captures Beauty, Planes Happen.
Of course I prefer Coopers Kong. Of course!!! I have no doubt that PJ
himself would say the same thing, hee hee. However, the highest praise
I can heap on this movie is that there will be folks here and in the
general public who will say that they prefer PJs Kong to the original!
Blasphemy? Not quite. None of those folks will be the ones like myself
who were immersed in Kong at Thanksgiving, The Million Dollar Movie,
fans who grew up with King Kong and for whom it is their favorite
movie. Im just saying that the folks who came to KiKn as PJ fans and
who discovered Cooper through us will be thrilled, and having only
recently discovered KK33 many will prefer it.
On the other hand, I seriously doubt that even among the fans who loved
KK76 that there are many who would raise KK76 over KK33. A couple Im
sure, but certainly not very many at all.
Naomi Watts gives an Oscar-worthy performance as Ann Darrow, she is a
delight....
Jack Blacks performance ... was likewise brilliant....
Ive read one unfavorable review of Adrien Brodys role which said his
was a great performance but that the character was lacking impact.
Naaaah, I disagree.
I thought Brodys Jack Driscoll was the perfect heroic counterpoint to
Kyle Chandlers faux-macho Bruce Baxter....
Evan Parks Hayes was actually my favorite character in the movie...
(and it is his interaction with the young Jimmy that )makes Jamie
Bells performance so good as well...
Colin Hanks Preston was the perfect sidekick to Carl Denham....
Like (so and so) I found Thomas Kretschmanns Captain Engelhorn to be
(quite interesting)...
Man, not a poor performance yet, thats for sure.
What, then of Andy Serkis? Well, his Kong is surely Oscar-worthy, Best
Actor indeed! We believed Kong, we felt for Kong, we cried for Kong,
Kong was not a CGI character, he was The Beast! ...
How about them SkIIPS, huh? The Skull Island Indigenous Peoples were
waaaay scarier than I expected....
1933 NYC was a marvel to behold, and very much a character in the epic
tale....
Oddly enough I didnt cry at the end, and I dont exactly know why. I
think its as simple as having been visually stunned, and coming off of
a week chock full of emotional highs and shocks, that I was just too
drained. Who knows. Ill let you know how the wellspring fairs on
Wednesday!!!
