Hi All!
This is Gary and Larry here with the first of our 2005 GrooFest (akaSan Diego Comic Con International) reports.
Well, of course Larry has to start off with a Grooism!
The Short Version?
After boarding his plane at LaGuardia Airport in NYC on Wedneasday night, Larry realized way too late that his Groo:The Game cards were in his carryon bag! The result? His plane refused to even attempt to take off for over 2 1/2 hours! He got to Dallas/FT Worth Airport at about 11:00pm, a wee bit too late to make his 9:45pm connection! As there were no further flights to San Diego that evening, he was forced to book a hotel room and fly out in the am. The next morning his flight was due in at 8:30 am, but he had to cancel his breakfast date, Last Kiss scribe John Lustig, as his plane was delayed yet again, arriving at about 9:50 am!
By the time he met his now non-breakfast date to pick up his convention badge and finally head to the hotel to check in, he approached the hotel front desk...
"Hi, I need to check in, my name is..." Larry started.
"LARRY!!!" shouted roommate Gary Grossmann, who only arrived 30 seconds after him! WHAT TIMING!
Gary started to complain that his plane was delayed 20 minutes, but you know, Larry IS Mister Grooism for a reason!
Well, we met up with Sergio, who as always looked great, was in rare form with the guests and in constant demand from fans and pros alike, and saw Mark to get the bad news that Caroline wasn't coming (Nooooo). We ran into Steve Kuhn and Kaytee, found Nate Piekos' BLAMBOT booth with Chett (but so far missing Shane) and also found Scott Hudlow, but NO ERIC!!!"
We wrangled Sergio up to the Groo Panel, where we learned that work proceeds apace for The Groo Movie, and that Groo/Conan is still a go, but it's just getting ready to be started. Mark thinks we'll see the firtst issue around January, as a wild guess which we can't hold him to.
Sergio would still like to eventually do the Groo: Friends & Foes 12-issue, and the Groo Encyclopedia, and a massive Groo foldout about 20 feet long... but not quite yet, too many things at once.
At Mark's prodding, Sergio told a story where his Dad was a sort of Actor's Union Rep in Mewico supervising filming, and they were shooting a SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE film, when shooting was delayed due to her diving stunt double not showing up. Sergio's Dad made the joke that Sergio was an accomplished diver, and next thing he knew, against his will (I'll bet) Sergio found himself in a women's bathing suit acting as her stunt double! (This was before he grew a mustache, luckily!) This is the most we've ever actually seen Sergio blush, folks!
It looks like the Groo Game WILL be reprinted, although the original artwork is missing and the original publisher lost his disks of the art as well! Fortunately Tom Luth had backups of the colored artwork, so TOM LUTH SAVES THE DAY!
We called Eric's cell phone and left the message that it was not his turn to miss the Groo Panel and were wondering where he was. He snuck in a couple of minutes into the panel; his flight was delayed as bad as Larry's, and they apparently shut down the airport just after he landed. We know that Groo was somehow involved, don't we?
Speaking of Tom Luth, he had some hand colored Groo pages with his color separation notations for sale, so after Gary bought a fistful of these, Larry & Eric each bought a set as well!
We have the Disabled Services handbooks, enough for whover wants them!
Oh, and Stan Sakai is like TWO MILES away from Sergio. Like Sergio it's good to see that always crowded as well!
Our practice Gro oDInner went well, Gary, Eric, Larry and Scott were joined by two of Scott's buddies to go to a brew pub in Mission Valley. Yummmmmmm!
Anyway, we'll fill in more details tomorrow and givve new news as well.
See ya!
