Tropical Storm Sergio Forms Off Mexico
>From Associated Press
November 14, 2006 4:54 PM EST
MEXICO CITY - Tropical Storm Sergio formed off the Pacific coast of Mexico on Tuesday, and was expected to become a hurricane later in the week as it draws closer to land.
The unusual late-season storm was the second to form in the eastern Pacific this month. It was the first time since 1961 that two tropical storms have formed in the eastern Pacific in the month of November. Only five tropical storms have formed later in the year than Sergio, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.
By midday Tuesday, Sergio was located about 375 miles southwest of the resort of Acapulco, and had winds of about 40 mph. The storm was moving slowly north-northwest at about 3 mph, but was expected to take a somewhat more northerly course and strengthen, reaching hurricane force by Wednesday or Thursday.
Sergio was expected to reach a spot about 125 miles southwest of the port city on Manzanillo, still at hurricane strength, over the weekend.
Storms become hurricanes when their winds reach speeds of 74 mph.
