>>You can't take two steps without running in to a memorial to
someone...especially war dead. There was something odd and sad about how much of the town is
about soldiers who've died in the service of their country.<<
Don't tour Okinawa, if this sort of thing bothers you.... Except for the
fully booked golf and other Japanese resorts (some owned by big Japanese
corporations-- for use by their employees), most of the tourist attractions are some
sort of war memorial, and in case you somehow avoid these, there are smaller
tributes at other sorts of tourist attractions. And family tombs are just about
everywhere (whole hillsides sometimes ... look like small cities, except the
horizon seems to be too close).
Mind you, these are not memorials just for dead politicians or soldiers, but
also for schoolgirls ("Cave of Virgins") and the underground bunkers, etc.,
where the Imperial Japanese forces more or less directed their last campaigns
against Allied forces (and the hillside where their officers committed suicide
after the surrender).
