A few reasons....
1. I wouldn't buy just any random drawing by an artist I admired; I'd want a
nice piece.
2. If a piece is personalized, whether a caricature or an attached message,
I'd want to to be personalized to me, or at the very least to have been done
for or of somebody I was also interested in. In this case, I know of Jerry
DeFuccio, but I didn't know him or really follow his work, most of which was
behind the scenes.
3. Morally, I'm not particularly interested in being a grave-robber. Maybe
DeFuccio's relatives don't care about his collection, but the next
generation might, and I think it's pretty shortsighted of them to sell it
off like this and don't want to encourage that.
4. In most cases, the items in collections like this fall into two
categories; very personal and meaningful, and random junk. In the first
case, I think it should be offered back to the person who gave it or passed
on to a relative who will appreciate it. In the second case, It's not really
worth buying.
5. I know artists that have bought their own work on Ebay because the piece
in question was meaningful to them. If that were the case with Sergio, I
wouldn't want to interfere with that, either by driving up the price or by
grabbing it out from under him.
6. Sergio is still working and it's not that difficult to commission a work
from him. If I want a drawing by Sergio, I can put my money in Sergio's
pocket instead of picking over a dead man's desk.
Your mileage may vary.
