[Groop] GROO Odyssey Hard Cover? (maddening at netzero.net)

There are a couple other companies which also have done similar library bound hardcovers of the Usagi Yojimbo books over the years.
Along with Paw Prints (which is produced the most rebound editions), there has also been books from Sagebrush and Turtleback.

The company "Taylor-Baker" sounds like a spin on the mega-giant book distributor Baker & Taylor....

Hi Folks!

OK, here is everything I have found out about the Groo Trade Hardbacks:

There are two companies that produce (notice I didn’t say "publish") the Groo hardbacks. Follett did the one on ebay. They sell exclusively to schools & libraries, but obviously one slipped through a crack. I think you have to be a registered "member" to buy the book from the site Jim linked to, and you have to be a school or library to be a member. The other company is Taylor-Baker under their "Paw Prints" label. They sell to retailers in addition to schools and libraries, but it's strictly business-to-business. The Paw Prints books look a little nicer because they don't have that gap, or interruption, in the wrap around cover art that the Follett edition has. And there is apparently a bigger market for hardbacks overseas than domestically.

Another thing I found out is that none of the trade hardbacks can be considered "reprints." Dark Horse didn't even know they were being made! The Paw Prints people are doing exactly the same thing as the Follett folks, just in a different way; buying prints of the trade and rebinding them as hardbacks. It’s no different from you taking a Groo trade to any bindery and having them rebind it as a hardback, except these folks are anticipating the market for such things. That's not a "reprint." So I won't be putting either on the Groo List, although I may mention them somewhere.

So that's the story. The ebay price is, of course, completely stupid. And, of course, the guy hasn't changed his promo for the book, even though I have told him all of the above.

Take care all,

Gary G. (Groo Item Investigator)
