I know a
comic artist who buys a booth every year, and he says it gets harder
and harder to be worthwhile, as the booth prices keep going up, and
the actual comic people keep getting squeezed out by people coming to
see the movie stuff. (Thus even tho the aisles are packed, he sees
fewer customers.)
Last year, most of the art show staff felt that the PTBs needed to get back to choosing appropriate/thematically correct programming, sponsors, etc. Movies based on comic books-- yes. SF/F movies that had very "comic book-like" stories, costuming, etc-- OK. Twilight-- bit questionable, but does have a fantasy/horror component that makes it at least vaguely connected to CCI's "roots" (we also felt that Twi-lite fans need to "get a life" and out of the hallways... and out of the program rooms during non-Twilight events so people who want to attend those panels, etc. aren't shut out because ditsy necrophiliacs are in the seats "waiting" for their undead heroes).
However... last year, there was Glee programming/fandom. I've never watched it, but those who have said there is nothing remotely related to comics/cartoons/sci-fi/horror in the show. But again, that fan base packed hallways and rooms-- which meant staff generally couldn't attend anything else held in the rooms, because they couldn't spend 3-4 hrs in line/in the room "waiting" instead of working in their dept. And like Rick said, vendors/artists are not making enough at their booths to cover expenses (including their time), and fewer come each year, so those who come for "the comics" and not just for the "coolness" factor, are being shorted. (Can't do much about the booth costs-- those are based on the convention center's prices, which are rising rapidly; also, some programming has been moved to the con hotels, and those rooms aren't cheap, either).
