I called the guy at the shop and he explained it something like this:
1. Detatch the small flaps
2. Pop the box into a square and hold it upside down (non-flapped end toward the floor)
3. Fold the long flap without small flaps down toward the floor
4. Fold the small flaps flat against the long flap they're attached to and fold that on top of the other long flap.
5. Flip the box over
6. Pull the long flap without short flaps up as high as you can against the side
7. push the short flaps up against the skinny sides of the box
8. Push the long flap without shorter flaps down into the bottom of the box
9. Voila!

You'd think this would be something they would cover in Home Economics classes as a vital housekeeping skill.
I did manage to get them all assembled, and his entire comic book collection sorted and boxed more or less by title, by the time he got home. The stack of boxes is now being used as a napping post by our two cats.
