think the newer ones ARE a little more preachy than the Epic's.. but
you have to keep in mind that Mark and Sergio are really, really old
now. I mean VERY old. Like "Pappy, tell me a story about the good old
days" old.. and that's just how old men are.<

I agree that the visible quality is there, and it's arguably better than it ever was in the pre-Image period. But the story craft and delivery on these moral tales has faltered. The power of Groo in its classic period was the way it served hilarity and the characters rather than the topic. This, of course, played to the strengths of Sergio & Mark: Situational comedy. Groo managed to be your hero no matter what disaster he caused because the humor of his antics always informed the moral or theme involved... instead of the other way around.

To be honest, I don't really buy the argument that these guys are just old, and thus not able to craft better stories. Are they changed from who they were when the classic run was published? Of course, but this should have no bearing on the quality of their work. Are they angrier? More complacent? Do they hold themselves to different standards than they did before? Perhaps.

Maybe they don't get together like they used to at burger joints and delicatessens. Those old intros that they would include about hanging out and putting Groo together over sandwiches and passing napkins back and forth really showed in their work. They were having fun and sharing it with the rest of us. Those issues reflect that spirit.

-Al

CC: groop@groo.com
From: chadmriden@mac.com
To: m00rst@hotmail.com
Subject: Re: [Groop] Not OT.
Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2008 09:59:57 -0600

1.
