I hear you bro. We have been trying to book our night (Tangent) slightly different than the norm, with people whom you don't necessarily see in LA a lot. As you said, not because the local talent isn't good, but because there just isn't much diversity from event-to-event. To our dismay, in our first month we had a line-up that, in any other city, would have blown people's minds, but here in LA we had a luke-warm reception. So, this month we've tried to mix an assortment of "out-of-towners" with some local talent so people can still see their LA faves but also experience some new talent while they're out. We'll see how this month turns out.
I guess to sum it up, as a music lover I'd love to see a bit more diversity in LA, but as a promoter I've learned that you need to book the "safe" acts in order to make any night work here. Kinda sucks whether you're a music lover or promoter. Hopefully it'll change slowly. I'd sure love to see some fresh new (to LA) talent ALONG-SIDE with some of my LA faves.
