Interesting to hear how everyone was excited about havin fans at
Propaganda... I'm all about fresh air.
Friday nite I rushed home to shower and change in time to go see Ben Watt &
Jay Hannan on their Lazy Dog tour. I've been a fan of Ben's work for years
now, I love the stuff he produces and figured that his club is probably
good.
**I was wrong** It sucked. Once again, I'm glad I'm a "raver" and not a
clubber. I spent the entire evening (we got there at 10 and left around 1)
analzing everything that was wrong with the night, and kind of comparing the
differences between what I like and what this was. Also the differences
between producers and DJs.
First of all, the guys did a tag-team set. I've heard a few tag-team sets,
and they're usually pretty good. However, I realized that I want to hear
what my DJ can do for me. I want to be able to listen to the music, and have
it take me somewhere, not just move my body and make me dance. Not that
there's anything wrong with being high-energy, but having the tempo change
every 3 minutes because someone else was throwing a different record on
without really mxing it was totally turning me off.
I guess the people I know (I'll call them the "ravers") are more interested
in hearing what our dj can do. We want to hear things mixed... I know
programming is equally as important as mixing. These guys were just throwing
track after track on, changin tempo all the time. It was almost arrogant,
the way Ben was standing up there gloating... "look what I've brought you."
They were more interested in showing off their own stuff, rather than
showing us how good they could make it sound. So despite the fact that I did
get to hear some of my fave remixes (ie Jay spun Cada Vez by negrocan and
Ben spun "by your side"), they weren't really mixed very well. The crowd
didn't seem to mind, they were there to have their bodies jacked and indeed
they did.
Anyhow, the fact that the music wasn't impressing me wasn't the biggest
thing I had to gripe about, I was really concerned with the fact that it was
WAAY packed, there was only 1 bartender at the bar (how rediculous is
that?!) and there was NO ventilation at all. argh. I'm hard core, and I left
early because it was just too hot.
Honestly guys... how friggin expensive is it to turn on the AC for 3 hours?
It's not. Fuck promoters who won't turn on a fan.
I'm gonna start brining my own fan. Seriously, it's a major issue. The
reason people pass out at clubs n such is because they're packed in like
sardines, it gets too hot and they can't cool down. Not to mention if
they've been taking drugs, the likelihood for heat exhaustion rises about
85%.
*gets off soapbox*
So anyhow, after a shower and some rest my boys came n picked me up to see
Jonene at wonderbar at 2:30 am.
Jonene didn't show, so we paid $5 for naught. Well not really, the sound was
pretty good and the deejay (I can't recall his name now) was kickin some
nice jazzy tunes down. We danced til about 4 (I camped out in front of the
fan near the bathrooms for a while) then went home to sleep.
Hit up a few house parties sat nite, played a lil Soul Calibur (projectors
are cool!) and slept. Did the sunday BBQ thing yesterday, had some steak n
futurama with some friends. I was planning on hittin up King Britt @ Revival
but alas, my friend flaked on me n I didn't feel like walking over there
alone.
overall, not a bad weekend.
