[Dynagroove] lil sf review

i was a little disappointed to see that more people didn't turn up for
lil' sf last night. i'm guessing that promotion may be partially to
blame, but at the same time, it makes me sad that any time heather,
diz or someone like that plays, the place is packed, but anytime
someone tries to bring less commonly heard talent to this city, they
almost always don't do that well.

the location was kind of what you'd expect for west hollywood (and i
don't mean that in a good way), but nice enough, and the sound system
was pretty decent (aside from some ground hum in the right turntable
at first).

the music overall was great. buck played well, as usual, throwing down
some dope disco and funk tracks early on in the evening, and ending up
with one of his own productions.

i don't think i've heard rasoul before (maybe once in miami) but i
enjoyed what i heard; i wasn't so into the beginning of his set, but
there were definitely some cool tracks in there. he was playing a bit
too loud at first, which was driving the mid/high speakers into
distortion.

spun played one of the best sets i've heard from him in a while. i
feel bad every time he's out here, because he always seems to get
these gigs that are *almost* there, but i've never seen him get booked
for one of those parties that makes you feel better about the la
scene.... of course he played a lot of the early unlock the house
parties, but that was a while back.

in any event, he played pretty bangin' house the whole time; less
eclectic a style than i usually expect from him. a good 10 minutes
into his set, he had almost everyone in the place on their feet.

i'm sure that the fact that there was a decent rotary mixer (a rane)
and a fairly loud monitor helped all the djs out... a lot of people
neglect details like this. the turntables did seem to be a bit slanted
(they were suspended from the ceiling).

the bar could have been a little cheaper, but about what you'd expect
in that area... overall i thought this party was good, but it failed
to live up to its potential, simply because not quite enough people
made it out. hopefully the promoters will keep on doing what they're
doing: bringing good talent to this city at an affordable price.
